SUMMER COURSES & CAMPS
Wor-Wic Offers Summer Courses for Gifted and
Talented Students

Salisbury, MD. - Wor-Wic offers summer courses for gifted and talented students.
Parents of fourth through ninth grade gifted and talented students can register their children for Summer Scholars at Wor-Wic Community College beginning Monday, Feb. 15.

Fifteen new courses are being offered this summer, including “Lego Robotics – Master Your Mission!,” “Make Your First Video Game!,” “So You Want to Be a Rock Star!,” “Three, Two, One: Blast Off!” and “Crazy for Clothes: Fashion Design 101.”

Other topics include culinary arts, crime scene investigation, green energy, math games, self-expression through art and writing, nursing career exploration, chess, computer animation, digital photography, starting a business, crazy chemistry and weather exploration.

The one-week courses are being offered Monday through Friday, beginning July 12. Students can take full- or half-day courses. Full-day courses will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. with a one-hour lunch. Half-day courses, which are offered from 9 a.m. to noon or 1 to 4 p.m., can also be taken back-to-back to create a full-day schedule. Before and after care is available at the college’s on-campus child development center.

The courses are designed for public and private school gifted and talented students entering grades four through nine in the fall of 2010. A student’s gifted and talented status is determined by the school they attend, based on the student’s outstanding abilities in the areas of general intellectual capabilities, specific academic aptitudes, or the creative, visual or performing arts.

Feb. 6 – High school students and their parents can get free help completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) online by attending “You Can Afford College” from 9 to 11 a.m. at Wor-Wic Community College in Salisbury. Continental breakfast, admissions information and campus tours will also be available. Bring completed IRS 1040 tax forms, W-2 forms and all other 2009 financial information. For more

Feb. 8 – “Song Yet Sung: A Negro Spiritual Tribute,” a free musical event in celebration of African-American history month, will be held at 6 p.m. in Guerrieri Hall at Wor-Wic Community College in Salisbury. A tribute to James McBride’s novel, “Song Yet Sung,” the musical event will include readings adapted from the novel interwoven with traditional spiritual music, all performed by the Salisbury University (SU) music department with artistic direction from SU music faculty member John Wesley Wright. Feb. 24 – In celebration of African-American History Month, Cotton Club Java will be held at 7 p.m. in Room 302 of the Student Center at Wor-Wic Community College in Salisbury. March 16 – A free resumé workshop called “Take Your Resumé from Fizzle to Sizzle” will be held at 4:30 p.m. in Room 105 of Henson Hall at Wor-Wic Community College in Salisbury. Topics will include effective resumé writing and job fair networking. The workshop is designed to help students, alumni and members of the community prepare for the college’s job fair on Thursday, April 1. Pizza and soda will be served to participants. March 17 – In celebration of women’s history month, Kate Campbell Stevenson will provide an artistic representation of historical women during a free performance at 7 p.m. in Guerrieri Hall at Wor-Wic Community College in Salisbury. Stevenson will portray Rachel Carson, Bessie Coleman and Eleanor Roosevelt. For more information, call (410) 572-8711.

March 20 & 21 – Dessert Theater 2010 will be held Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. in Guerrieri Hall at Wor-Wic Community College in Salisbury. The theme will be “At Your Service,” with the featured plays set in restaurants and bars. Desserts, catered by Wor-Wic’s culinary arts students, will be served during intermission. April 1 – A free job fair will be held from 2:30 to 6 p.m. in Room 103 of the Workforce Development Center at Wor-Wic Community College in Salisbury. Participants should come dressed in interview attire and have resumés to give to interested employers. Individuals and employers needing more information can call (410) 334-2903. April 5 – “Cultural Project Presentation Day,” a daylong series of free health care presentations by nursing students at Wor-Wic Community College, will be held from 8:30 to 4:30 p.m. in Guerrieri Hall at Wor-Wic in Salisbury. The day will include student-designed cultural displays and a series of seven one-hour cultural presentations by Wor-Wic’s associate degree nursing students. April 5 – To celebrate national poetry month, a free poetry reading by William Hathaway, author of “Sightseer” and five other poetry collections, will be held at 7 p.m. in Guerrieri Hall at Wor-Wic Community College in Salisbury. April 22 – In celebration of national poetry month, a free poetry reading by Maryland’s poet laureate Stanley Plumly, author of 11 books of poetry and poetics, will be held at 7 p.m. in Guerrieri Hall at Wor-Wic Community College in Salisbury. April 24 – A free spring chorus concert called “Sounds of America” will be held at 7:30 p.m. in Guerrieri Hall at Wor-Wic Community College in Salisbury.
